Built by Dominican friars in 1523, this convent often served as a shelter during Carib Indian attacks and, more recently, as headquarters for the Antilles command of the U.S. Army. Now the beautifully restored building is home to the Galería Nacional, a four-room museum showcasing paintings from the 17th to the 20th centuries.
The Institute of Puerto Rican Culture maintains a crafts store and bookstore here.
