Kids love the free-form pool that shimmers in the courtyard of this beachfront resort. All the suites have separate bedrooms and living rooms but are otherwise uninteresting. Golfers can take in the mountains and the sea at the same time while playing the course designed by the legendary Chi Chi Rodríguez. The Paradise Café serves Caribbean favorites such as herb-crusted sea bass with mango butter. Pros: on a gorgeous beach; family-friendly environment. Cons: chain-hotel feel; noisy common areas, parking lot is crowded and confusingly signed.

We did not stay here, but we sure wish we had. We stayed at the Hyatt Hacienda Del Mar, based on the Fodor's description. What our book could not have known was that the Hyatt is under construction and is a mess. We visited the Embassy Suites and were stunned by the beautiful atrium lobby, pool and beach. Caution - all your fellow guests will be enjoying that free breakfast around 9 or 9:30, so be prepared to wait in a very long line if you're hungry at that time.
Note I have given 3's to all but the "atmosphere" rating because I'm forced to answer, not because I know what any of that is like.
