Ponce and the Southern Coast Travel Guide

La Parguera

La Parguera is best known for its bioluminescent bay. Although it is not nearly as spectacular as the one in Vieques, it's still a beautiful sight on a moonless night. Boats, including some glass-bottom vessels, line up at the town dock and depart several times each evening for 45-minute trips across the bay. During the day you can explore the nearby mangrove forest.

The town

bursts at the seams with vacationers from other parts of the island on long holiday weekends and all during the summer. The town's dock area feels a bit like Coney Island, and not in a good way. Vendors in makeshift stalls hawk cheap souvenirs, and ear-splitting salsa music pours out of open-air bars. There are signs warning people not to drink alcoholic beverages in the street, but these are cheerfully ignored.
