The official languages are Spanish and English, in that order. Spanish prevails in everyday conversation, in commerce, and in the media. And although English is widely spoken, you'll probably want to take a Spanish phrase book along, particularly if you're traveling outside of San Juan. Hotel front-desk staffs and restaurant staffs in large facilities speak English. Most business and government phones are staffed by people who speak English (or will find someone who does), and telephone-answering systems are bilingual.
