The ridge running across the center of the island, called the Cordillera Central, is seldom explored by travelers. That's a shame, because the scenery here is incomparable. Driving along the Ruta Panoramica, the "Panoramic Route" that traverses the heavily forested mountains, you catch glimpses of the island's northern and southern coasts. Some of the most remote nature reserves are found in the Cordillera Central. The cloud-covered Bosque Estatal de Toro Negro has waterfalls, natural pools, and the island's tallest mountain peak, Cerro de Punta. The drier Bosque Estatal de Maricao is known for its numerous species of birds. A casual, laid-back atmosphere is the norm in this region.
