The weeks preceding Lent have special significance for Catholicism and other religions, and Puerto Rico celebrates its Carnival with vigor. The flamboyant celebrations, held island-wide but with particular energy in Ponce, are complete with float parades, folk music, local foods, Carnival Queen pageants, and music competitions.
