Puerto Rico's southern coast is drier than other parts of the island, and cacti are abundant. Here you'll find tropical dry forests such as the Bosque Estatal de Guánica, one of the island's most popular destinations for hikers. It's also one of the best places for bird-watching, as there are more than 100 species, including the the pearly eyed thrasher, the lizard cockoo, and the nightjar. Don't worry, though, because beaches are always close at hand. They can be crowded, especially on holiday weekends, since this is a favored destination for Puerto Rican families. The south also has some of island's most historic towns, including bustling Ponce, with its fascinating blend of neoclassical and art-deco buildings.
