La Fonda del Jibarito

$-$$, Caribbean, San Juan

User Rating: ***** 4.6

Fodor's Review:

Sanjuaneros have favored this casual, family-run restaurant for years. The conch ceviche and chicken fricassee are among the specialties on the menu of comida criollo dishes. The back porch is filled with plants, and the dining room is filled with fanciful depictions of life on the street outside. The ever-present owner, Pedro J. Ruiz, is filled with the desire to ensure that everyone is happy.

Looks can pleasantly deceive

This place was surprising. Don't let the unassuming looks fool you. Inside this home-style cafe, you'll find the most friendly and accomodative service and some of the best food on the island served with no frills but lots of flavor. The soup appetiser is a to die for (and I don't even eat soups). You may wander around for an hour trying to find this place and parking is a real trial but it's worth the effort.
