Fodor's Review:

Built on the grounds of a coffee plantation, this 19th-century inn is surrounded on all sides by mountain peaks. Several of the clapboard-walled rooms in the red-roofed manor house have private balconies overlooking lush gardens and the spring-fed pool; the nicest are Numbers 4 and 5. There are plenty of small parlors where you can relax with a drink from the bar. Breakfast and dinner are included in the room rates. The dining area, which meanders through three different rooms, serves criollo fare such as chicken with rice and beans. Nonguests are welcome for dinner, too. One hiking trail near the property leads to Cerro de Punta, about a 2 1/2-hour climb.

shoddy treatment - not worthy of the "Paradore" distinction

Posted by Eloise from Colchester, VT on 1/18/06

We made reservations here in November for a total of 4 nights in January. We arrived on the appointed check-in date at 4:30 in the afternoon, the place was apparently hosting a local mayors' convention, and had no interest in a couple of strangers. The young woman at the reception desk was very short with us -"what do YOU want?" When we said we had reservations, without even checking, she flatly responded, "not for tonight you don't." We asked her to check and reluctantly she did so and declared that we could check in two days later but there was no reservation for the first two nights - and made it clear that she could care less about the fact that we were, with darkness rapidly approaching, miles from any place where we could get lodging. This was particularly striking when compared to our experience in half a dozen stays at other paradores around Puerto Rico. Typically the people are sensational, and whether it's rustic or resort level, the paradores are generally great. That made the shoddy behavior here even more striking in contrast.
