On more than 500 acres, this sprawling resort is geared toward outdoor activities. Many people come to play the championship golf courses or hike in the nearby rain forest. But the biggest draw is the 2-mi-long stretch of sand just steps from the door. There's a kiosk near the swimming pools that rents sailboats and other equipment; a dive shop organizes excursions to nearby places of interest. Even the extensive programs for children are mostly outdoors. The seven-story hotel, which wraps around lush gardens, never feels overwhelming. Some rooms are on the small side but are cleverly designed to make use of all the available space. The newest addition is the Mandara Spa, which transports you to the South Pacific with its hand-carved wood furnishings from Bali.

We just returned from the Rio Mar and loved it. The beach is absolutely stunning and there are 2 huge pools, one of which is for adults only. This is also one of the few resorts where there are far more chairs at both the pool and beach than there are people--no more running down early to save spots. The rooms aren't huge but they're well laid out and very modern. The staff could not have been nicer and the concierges were as knowledgeable as any I've encountered. Good food, great location. It's not cheap but I also never felt that we were being taken advantage of. I have no complaints at all.

Very old reviews.

I'm interested in the Rio Del Mar but looking at the reviews that are mostly three years old really don't convey many recent opinions or opinions . Hopefully, things do change, good or bad, over a three year term. Come on Fodors, I like your web comments but not three year old feedback ! Nothing worse than "old news". I know you can do better ! Thanks.

Booked a Ocean Front room and got a room on the first floor looking at a garden.Restaurants need improving and service. The resort fee of $65.00 a day is a joke.Golf course was very nice as well is the beach.

Great Family Spot

We recently returned from a trip here (1/07). We loved it. We were greeted by a guest services manager who interacted with us several times during our stay to ensure that we were getting what we needed. We had two connecting rooms for my wife and I and two children (under two). Very good babysitting services are offered ($17 an hour for 2 children). The babysitter was a professional who had been a nanny in the past). Beach was quite nice. Pools were nice, though not heated. Nice toddlers playground is on grounds. 95% of the staff was caring, friendly and attentive. Food is expensive and the resort is somewhat isolated unless you have a car. We enjoyed the food for the most part, but it costs more to eat here than it does in New York City. David's cookies for breakfast offers bagels and cereal and muffins, at only slightly inflated prices but if you're tired of carbs, you pay $24 per person for a buffet breakfast that is good, though overpriced. We ate at Shimas, Palio, Mirabella, and La Coqui (for Lunch). Food was very good, but not great. The options for room service were a bit disappointing. The physical space of the resort is quite nice and easy to get around. Parking is expensive, though if you rent a car from Avis at the resort, then you pay only $5 daily for self parking as opposed to $15 for self parking per day and 20 for valet parking. Family perks that you may not be aware of include the availability of refrigerators and microwaves upon request (there was a waiting list for microwaves though). These are complementary as are diaper genies and "pack and plays". Cabanas were readily available, but expensive at $90 per day including a cooler of soft drinks, a nice fruit plate, and assorted bags of chips and pretzels. Id return either with my family or as a couple. I wouldn't likely return at full price, though. It is a solid 4-star resort.

What's good about this place??

I went to the Westin Rio Mar in July 2005 on trip with my boyfriend's company. I work at a four diamond property myself, and although this hotel stated it was four diamond, it was far from it. The rooms were totally outdated, ours specifically had a "heavenly bed and bath" that were not even comparable to other Westin Properties I have stayed at. The carpet was torn, and the couch was missing two pillows. We found the restaurants to be extremely overpriced, with little variety. The beach is enormous, which was great, except, they have padded (non-waterproof) cushions on all the chairs, which got soaked a few times a day with the showers. They did not clean the beach often enough either, there were a lot of cigarette butts, and cups left behind. Also, if you are looking for lots to do or places to shop, this hotel only had one shop and one jewelry store. The best thing was the live entertainment at night in the lobby bar. I would probably return to Puerto Rico, but definitely not to this hotel.
