Founded in 1901 on a 235-acre farm on the outskirts of Mayagüez, the Estación Experimental de Agricultura Tropical (Tropical Agriculture Research Station) is run by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and contains a tropical plant collection that has been nurtured for more than a half century. More than 2,000 plant species from all over the tropical world are found here, including teak, mahogany, cinnamon, nutmeg, rubber, and numerous exotic flowers.
