Fodor's Review:
One of the finest collections of its type in Puerto Rico, the Museum of the Americas is on the second floor of the imposing former military barracks, Cuartel de Ballajá. Most exhibits rotate, but the focus is on the popular and folk art of Latin America. The permanent exhibit, "Las Artes Populares en las Américas," has religious figures, musical instruments, basketwork, costumes, farming implements, and other artifacts of the Americas. The old military barracks, big and boxy in a neoclassical style and painted green and peach, was built between 1854 and 1864, and its immense inner courtyard is used for concerts and private events such as weddings. With a little notice, the staff can take you on a guided tour.
