Centro Ceremonial Indígena de Tibes

Tibes Indian Ceremonial Center
Museums / Galleries, Archaeological Sites, Ponce

Fodor's Review:

The Tibes Indian Ceremonial Center, discovered after flooding from a tropical storm in 1975, is the island's most important archaeological site. The pre-Taíno ruins and burial grounds date from AD 300 to 700. Be sure to visit the small museum before taking a walking tour of the site, which includes nine ceremonial playing fields used for a ritual ball game that some think was similar to soccer. The fields are bordered by smooth stones, some engraved with petroglyphs that researchers believe might have ceremonial or astronomical significance. Enough mutilated corpses have been found here for researchers to speculate that the residents practiced human sacrifice. A village with several thatch huts has been reconstructed in an original setting.
