El Yunque & the Northeast

The most popular day trip from San Juan, El Yunque doesn't disappoint. There are more than a dozen hiking trails through this tropical forest, leading down to hidden pools and up to mountaintop observatories. If you're pressed for time, you can even experience it from your car; the waterfall called Cascada La Cola is right along the road. Don't miss beachfront Luquillo, which has one of the island's best-known beaches and a string of kioskos (food stands) selling all types of seafood. West of Luquillo, the coastline gets wilder. The Reserva Natural Las Cabezas de San Juan, with its miles of mangrove forest, is one of the island's most remote nature reserves. The only real city, Fajardo, won't win any beauty contests, but it does make a good base for exploring the region.
