Gingerbread Hill Review

This secluded mountainside retreat offers remarkable value, splendid views, utter tranquillity, and exquisite grounds. Owners David and Clover Lea laughingly call themselves "unrepentant but well-done hippies," and they are—in the best sense of respecting nature, supporting local culture, and being self-sufficient. This Renaissance couple built the villas themselves, using recycled or indigenous materials wherever possible (even the soaps are homemade). Each one offers creative touches as trompe-l'oeil window frames, hand-painted tiles, and wraparound verandahs that afford extraordinary views; Mango Cottage is solar-powered. The cozy Backpacker's Special (just $45) has a microwave, CD player, washing machine, and fridge. Reasonably priced catering is available, using fixings from the hydroponic gardens and fresh eggs from the family's chickens. You can pluck your own breakfast from the extravagant fruit trees.
