Health and Safety

In Fort-de-France, an increased police presence and video cameras have helped lower the crime rate. However, you should exercise the same safety precautions you would in any large city. It's best to go downtown at night only as part of a group, preferably of Martinicans. Never leave jewelry, money, or designer sunglasses unattended on the beach or in your car. Keep your laptop under wraps, even in your hotel room, and put valuables in hotel safes.

Dengue, chikungunya, and zika have all been reported throughout the Caribbean. We recommend that you protect yourself from these mosquito-borne illnesses by keeping your skin covered and/or wearing mosquito repellent. The mosquitoes that transmit these viruses are as active by day as they are by night.
