Long one of our favorites, this heavenly hideaway that underwent a complete transformation in 2006 has been featured so frequently in French, international, and American media that it has become a celebrity hotel. The existing accommodations in creole cases (cottages)—painted red, purple, and subtle earth tones—have been enlarged, soundproofed, completely refurnished, and given updated bathrooms and terraces that maximize the glorious sea view. Each now has a flat-screen TV, and the decor throughout is enlivened with the latest designer offerings from Bangkok. Scattered throughout the lush grounds are four bi-level bungalows with private plunge pools. Indian massage is now offered, and the included breakfast has reached a higher, creative level. With a fishpond at its entrance, the terrace restaurant has been expanded, adding a deck with a monumental view. Pros: stimulating client mix; owner Jean Christophe is on-site and accessible; sophisticated and artistic ambience is unique in Martinique. Cons: rough road (particularly in rainy season); somewhat remote hilltop location; smallest rooms have small bathrooms.
