Larger hotels usually include a big buffet breakfast of eggs, fresh fruit, cheese, yogurt, croissants, baguettes, jam, and café au lait. Smaller relais (inns) often have open-air terrace kitchenettes. At almost all properties, you can request smoking or no-smoking rooms; the new French law banning smoking in public places went into effect January 2008. Alas, hotel rooms are considered private. Most hotels do not have elevators and many are built on hillsides, so if you have issues with stairs- or path-climbing, be sure to ask about that.
