Getting to Martinique: Although there are just a few nonstop flights, connections are still available through St. Lucia, St. Maarten, and Guadeloupe and San Juan on smaller island-hopper planes. It's also possible to get to Martinique by ferry from Dominica, Guadeloupe, or St. Lucia, a less-desirable though affordable trip. The modern Lamentin International Airport (FDF) is about a 15-minute taxi ride from Fort-de-France and some 40 minutes from Les Trois-Ilets Peninsula.

Hassle Factor: Medium to high.

Nonstops: You can no longer fly nonstop from the States, so most travelers connect in San Juan (American Eagle or Air France).
