Horseback Riding in Martinique

Horseback riding excursions can traverse scenic beaches, palm-shaded forests, sugarcane fields, and a variety of other tropical landscapes. Trained guides often include running commentaries on the history, flora, and fauna of the island.

At Black Horse Ranch (Les Trois-Ilets, 97229. 0596/68-37-80), one-hour trail rides (EUR 35) go into the countryside and across waving cane fields; two hours on the trail (EUR 40) bring riders near a river. Only western saddles are used for adults; children can ride English. Semiprivate lessons in French or English are EUR 40 a person, less for kids if they can join a group.

Some guides are English-speaking at Ranch de Caps (Cap Macré, Le Marin, 97290. 0596/74-70-65 or 0696/23-18-18), where you can take a half-day ride (western) on the wild southern beaches and across the countryside for EUR 45. Rides go out in the morning (8:30 to noon) and afternoon (1:30 to 5) every day but Monday. If you can manage a full day in the saddle, it costs EUR 75. A real treat is the full-moon ride but they need to accrue a group to orchestrate that Most of the mounts are Anglo-Arabs. Riders are encouraged to help cool and wash their horses at day's end. Reserve in advance. Riders of all levels are welcomed.

Ranch Jack (Anse-d'Arlets, 97229. 0596/68-37-69 or 0696/92-26-58. ranch.jack@wanadoo.fr) has trail rides (English style) across some beautiful country for EUR 35 an hour; half-day excursions for EUR 50 (EUR 58 with transfers from nearby hotels) go through the fields and forests to the beach. Short rides can range from EUR 16 to EUR 25. The lessons for kids are recommendable.
