Sandals Montego Bay Review

The largest private beach in Montego Bay is the highlight of this Sandals—one of the most popular upscale resorts in the Caribbean. It's one big party, despite the planes that zoom overhead (the airport is minutes away, making it a good option for quick trips). Rooms are done in tropical colors and have four-poster beds. For top-notch luxury consider the rooms and suites in the Bay Roc Villa Suites, which have butler service and 24-hour room service.

    Sandals Montego Bay Review

We stayed at Sandals Montego Bay for 7 nights for our honeymoon in May 2011. Here are my general thoughts/opinions:
    - upon arrival we were greeted with champagne and Red Stripe, which was great, but our room wasn't ready for 3 hours. Luckily it was a nice day, so we ate lunch, had a few cocktails and explored the hotel a bit until it was ready.
    - since this was my first all-inclusive experience, I think my expectations for the room were high. The room was average at best. The bathroom was old and in serious need of updating. The room itself was ok. It did have a large closet, safe, and nice balcony that overlooked the ocean. The wall-mounted air conditioning unit was not working for about an hour upon arrival, but eventually it kicked on and cooled the room quickly.
    - One major disappointment was that there are only 2 pools, and only one of which has a swim up bar. For that reason, we spent most of our days on the beach. The beach is AMAZING! The water is so crystal clear and there were always plenty of chairs to be found and friendly staff members offering beverages. The only thing I ate at the beach "grill" was the jerk chicken - amazing! If you don't like that, then skip the grill and go inside to the buffet which had much more options.
    - We ventured to the Sandals Royal Carribean (RC) one day and the main pool there was much bigger than MoBay and the swim up bar was much more lively and had more of a party feel than the one at MoBay! That said, the beach at RC closes at like 6pm and they pull up all the chairs - still not sure why (high tide maybe?). So, in the longrun, we were glad we stayed at MoBay because the beach was open all night and we could take midnight strolls enjoy the ocean waves at any hour!
    - The food for the most part was pretty good. Our favorite was the Italian restaurant, which we ate at twice. Make your reservations the minute you arrive, or ahead of time if you can. They fill up so quickly that if you wait until the last minute, you will end up at the main cafe grill which does not require reservations.
    - The nighttime entertainment was what you would expect and in line with what you get on a cruise ship. We wished that this hotel has a casino. Not that we're huge gamblers, but just to have another activity to do at night besides drinking would have been nice. The Irish Pub gets going with fun dance music around 11ish and we met a lot of other fun couples in there.
    - Overall, we enjoyed our stay 1) because it was our honeymoon and we enjoyed relaxing on the beautiful beach and 2) because the value was good for the $ we paid. Our gripes were not enough nighttime entertainment, pools were way too small, and overall the hotel and rooms need a major renovation and facelift. Since this is the very first Sandals resort built, I would imagine an update is soon to come. We will not be returning to this hotel mainly because of the reasons I just listed, but we will vacation at Sandals brand hotels again. All-inclusive is definitely the way to go and we're hoping other Sandals locations will be a bit more modern and updated.
    - I almost forgot one major plus - this hotel is 15 minutes from the airport. The roads in Jamaica are horrible, but we didn't have to experience that b/c the trip from hotel to airport was so short. You can hear the planes while at the hotel but it literally lasts 1 minute and then you go back to your day and forget all about it. It's really not that noticeable after the first few go by.

    Hope this review is helpful!
