Port Antonio's most unique accommodation is also its most basic, aimed solely at travelers who don't mind an experience that is, as Jamaicans would say, "rootsy." Great Huts, just minutes from the jerk stands of Boston Beach, is styled like an African village and celebrates African art and culture. Saturday evening cultural shows feature drumming, music, and dance. Accommodations range from simple huts to two-story tree houses; there are also some permanent tents planted directly on the sand for those on very tight budgets. The cheapest huts have shared baths, and these do not have access to hot water. None of them are air-conditioned, although all come with fans (wall mounted or ceiling). The dedicated staff here can point you to out-of-the-way activities such as a unique volunteer tourism program in which Great Huts guests help out at the Port Antonio homeless shelter.
