Port Antonio's most unique accommodation is also its most basic, aimed solely at travelers who don't mind an experience that is, as Jamaicans would say, "rootsy." Great Huts, near the jerk stands of Boston Beach, is styled like an African village. Saturday evening cultural shows feature drumming, music, and dance. Accommodations range from simple huts to two-story tree houses; there are also permanent tents planted directly on the sand for those on tight budgets. The cheapest
huts have shared baths, with no hot water. None are air-conditioned, although all come with fans. The dedicated staff can point you to out-of-the-way activities such as a unique volunteer tourism program in which Great Huts guests help out at the Port Antonio homeless shelter.
