Jamaican Bobsled Team

Jamaican Bobsled Team

Ice is a rare sight in Jamaica—except in the cocktails enjoyed at many beach bars. But in the 1980s, the idea of founding an Olympic bobsled team wasn't as crazy as it seemed. After all, a Jamaican pushcart derby uses many of the same moves as bobsledding. The team that debuted at the Calgary Olympics in 1988 drew worldwide attention; in the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, the team finished in 14th place. The team inspired the 1993 movie Cool Runnings. What became of the team? It continues to train in Evanston, Wyoming. Proceeds come from the Jamaica Bobsled Café, on Montego Bay's Hip Strip and at the Sangster International Airport.
