Getting to Guadeloupe: You can connect through San Juan or another Caribbean island. Some travelers prefer the regularly scheduled ferry service from Dominica, St. Lucia, and Martinique, but the extra travel time certainly increases the hassle factor. The smaller islands—though charming and rewarding destinations—are harder to reach; even with regular ferries and air service, you will almost always need to spend some time on Guadeloupe both coming and going. Aéroport International Pôle Caraïbes, 3 mi (5 km) from Pointe-à-Pitre (PTP), is a fairly modern airport by Caribbean standards.
