Most visitors to the North Coast fly into the International Gregorio Luperon Airport (POP) in Puerto Plata and either base themselves in Playa Dorada, from which they set forth to explore, either by rental car or on guided tours. Others head straight to the established resort town of Sosúa. The young and sporty keep going until they hit Cabarete, renowned for its surfing—kite- and windsurfing, too—and its hot nightlife. More recently, the Cabrera area, a 60 minute-drive due east from Cabarete, is being discovered by those who want a more tranquil and upscale villa experience. A few travelers even head to the Samaná Peninsula, but the new airport there makes the trip from Puerto Plata less necessary.
