Hotel El Magnifico

Fodor's Review:

You'll find a healthy dose of unexpected luxury at this stellar boutique condo-hotel just a gravel driveway from the dusty craziness of town. The open reception area, backed by an artistic screen, is flanked by a quiet seating or swinging area (there's a comfy hammock) that whispers tranquillity. The lush gardens hold a pair each of pools and Jacuzzis. For your accommodations, try to get the new building 6; building 3 has some of the best interior design, but no water views; building 1 has an artsy Caribbean design and lots of color. The stonework surrounding it and the walkways to the warm, oceanfront Jacuzzi, are eye-popping. Creator Gerhard Hebert, a charming French Canadian, came to the DR as a surfer in 1984, and he has built a following. Pros: Even when the hotel is full, the gardens and pools do not feel crowded, interior decor is chic contemporary, children under 15 years are complimentary. Cons: Steep spiral staircases and no elevators, no restaurant or bar on-site, no phones (and no way to communicate with reception), credit cards carry a ridiculous 16% surcharge.
