One of Playa Dorada's first resorts (formerly the Jack Tar Village) has changed its name and concept, taking the budget-oriented property to an entirely new evolutionary level. Having been selling solely to groups from Canada and the United Kingdom (primarily families), the resort still has good kids facilities, including water slides and three kids' clubs. Now G.M. Jose Mariá Espart, who for a decade made Flamenco's Michaelangelo Club special, has brought the same level of service to the 44 newly renovated accommodations in the Royal Club section, which are being advertised and sold in the U.S. market. Only ambience music plays at the adults-only Royal Club pool, while the other guests and kids get revved up by the British MC at the big pool. A $6.5-million redo in late 2006 also added the handsome, cylindrical Lotus Asian restaurant. Pros: Four good specialty restaurants including a Caribbean one on the beach, well-known public casino and disco, price is very right. Cons: Infrastructure is not top-drawer, only a precious few of the villa accommodations have water views, food is not generally memorable in the buffet.
