This resort will dazzle you with its sprawling lobby, its hardwood benches and sculptures, and its curvaceous pool with a central Jacuzzi encircled by Roman pillars. As you swim along you can see the mountains and the beach. Other all-inclusives could learn from Iberostar's excellent buffet; of the à la carte restaurants, the Brazilian is the standout and the Mexican quite authentic. This resort does a lot right, and yes, there is a spa. Newly repainted, the rooms are somewhat dated but attractive, with their woven wall hangings and bright colors. Many staffers speak English here, and the resort itself is close to Puerto Plata, so you can have more contact with real Dominican life. At night, you can watch the show (the music is especially good) from the outdoor seating in the garden. Pros: Good management makes for a happy staff and a fun resort, blue-flag beach, top-shelf liquor in the lobby bar. Cons: Popularity translates to high-occupancy year-round, no Wi-Fi, pool can be very noisy.
