Celebrities and other bigwigs frequent this luxury residential resort, but with privacy paramount and security tight you can never get anyone to say whom you might see. The enclave has a relatively long history, having first opened in 1993, and has earned its enviable reputation. All the rentals have a private pool and a maid who cooks breakfast (you supply the groceries). A chef can be requested, but a month's notice is advised, even more for the Christmas holidays. One of the negativos of villa vacations is having to provision, a real chore when you don't know where to shop and may not speak the language. Sea Horse Ranch will provision your villa for $50, and even offers a nanny service. Within the rental villa inventory, there are some lovely older homes with character as well as spanking new, multimillion dollar Caribbean mansions that go beyond your fantasies. The beach club restaurant overlooking a dramatic cove delivers. The equestrian center is world-class. There's a two-night minimum stay (Christmas and New Year's is one week) but no check-in or check-out time. Pros: One of the most organized, well-managed villa enclaves in the country, potent security makes your vacation worry-free, location close to Puerto Plata and the airport. Cons: There's not much sense of place (you could be in an upscale neighborhood in Florida or Southern California), not all villas have Wi-Fi (and DSL is expensive).
