Playa Dorada was one of the first resort areas in the D.R. to be developed, and it still has a dozen or so all-inclusive resorts, along with one deluxe boutique hotel, Casa Colonial. What's interesting is how these older resorts are evolving in order to compete with their increasingly upscale competition to the east. Barcelo, wanting a presence in this region, purchased the Occidental Grand Flamenco in November 2007 and has renamed it Barcelo Puerto Plata; the company is in the midst of a major renovation, adding a gym and spa. A sexy new redo of a 20-some year-old Blue Bay Villa Dorada as an adults-only resort is also a major happening; it's spa-oriented and well-priced. Holiday Village Golden Beach (formerly Jack Tar Village) has taken the club-within-a-club concierge concept to a budget resort. And perched on a mountain ridge, the new Tubagua Plantation Village appeals to budget travelers and groups. More »
