Santo Domingo's Las Americas International Airport (SDQ), about 15 mi (34 km) east of Santo Domingo, has undergone many improvements since 2007, and giant color photos of smiling Dominicans now welcome visitors. It's still a major international destination, with many daily flights from the United States. Though much improved, it's still busy, and you really must allow a full two hours to check-in for an international flight.
La Isabela International Airport (JBQ), which opened in 2006 in Higuero, a northern Santo Domingo suburb, is the capital's domestic airport, servicing mostly intra-D.R. and charter flights.
If you book a package through a travel agent, your airport transfers will almost certainly be included in the price you pay. Look for your company's sign as you exit baggage claim. If you book independently, then you may have to take a taxi (approximately $40 for two persons whether you're going to Las Américas or La Isabela airport) or rent a car. Caribe Tours now has a bus that goes from the airport to downtown Santo Domingo for $10, if you're not burdened by much luggage. Prieto Tours also offers an airport shuttle service ($18 per person to Las Américas, $20 to La Isabela), with a minimum of two people; you must reserve this service in advance by phone or e-mail and pay in advance with a credit card. A private driver is also an option.
