Larimar is a semiprecious stone the color of the sea that is found only in the southwest region of the Dominican Republic. The Larimar Mine is one of the area's mines that can be visited. With the aid of a grant from U.S.A.I.D. and the assistance of Peace Corps volunteers, a new Bahoruco community collaboration will give visitors real-life tours of the mine, as well as a hands-on orientation of the history of larimar mining and processing, and visits to local workshops that make larimar jewelry. Eco-Tours offers organized group tours from Barahona and surrounding hotels. The cost of the full-day tour includes lunch, drinks, your guide, and the mine visit.
