A former home of the Leon banking family (circa 1920s), the French owner Lionel Bisteau has kept as much of the original as feasible, including the second-floor verandah, the columns and patterned tile floors so distinctive of the Zone. Room 8 has the most beautiful mustard-color replica tiles based on the damaged originals, which were fabricated by Dominican artist Candido Bido. In the reception area, contemporary art hangs and a Balinese sunbed provides a comfort zone. All of the furnishings in this three-year-old restoration are Indonesian, including beds' nouveau wooden canopies. Each room is unique, with colorful bedspreads matching the tile floors. Room rates include both breakfast and tax. Pros: Beautiful breakfast room and bar overlooking the petite pool, all rooms have Wi-Fi, low rates make this an exceptional value. Cons: Owner and staff have limited English, decor is somewhat spartan, hotel takes no credit cards.
