Hotel concierges still recommend this Malecón institution as having the best Dominican food (it's now a local chain of four). It's touristy, yes, but Dominicans still make up the majority of customers. You may want to try it for the three-tiered setting overlooking the ocean as well as the opportunity to see if the excellent sancocho (a rich, meaty stew), mofongo (stuffed mashed plantains), and other local favorites are as good as you hear. The sopa de pescado (fish soup) is the best this side of Mexico. You can also get wild and try the goat or pig's feet, or play it safe with grilled items and tropical sides like yucca. The restaurant serves both breakfast (from 7:30) and lunch (a buffet), but it's open 24 hours, and the clubbers come in for their late-night sancocho.
