Ring the bell at this artistically renovated town house, and the white wrought-iron gate opens to a small foyer with a large mirror and long stems of tropical flowers. To the left is the kitchen and bar, to the rear a courtyard furnished with outdoor tables and market umbrellas. A waterfall flows down the coral stone wall; with bamboo and exotic greenery, it's an urban oasis. You may feel as if you're staying with friends—in this case Suzanne and Bernie. She's a Swiss-German economist, he's an architect who designed both the hotel and the contemporary lighting fixtures. Rooms, all upstairs, are minimalist and squeaky clean. The courtyard is the setting for the healthy, European-style breakfast and the rum-soaked cocktail hour. A small café offering meals is set to open at this writing. Pros: Superior service, excellent location near Plaza España but not on a touristy block, rooftop terrace offers views and shaded sitting areas. Cons: Front rooms (particularly the one closest to the police station) are noisy in the early morning, no luxurious creature comforts.
