As you sit in the coral stone lobby of coral stone with high ceilings, brick archways, and Spanish wrought-iron chandeliers, you're enmeshed in 500 years of history. The heavy Havanaesque lobby furniture and the orange, slippery bedspreads and curtains detract from the beauty. Still, this good small hotel has beautifully quiet (and dark) second-floor rooms with stone floors and small windows. Contemporary iron beds are attractive (room No. 7 is the best), although the bedframes can block your view of the wall-mounted TV. A French owner (absent) and French and Haitian staff make El Beaterio attractive to Francophiles. You'll pay an extra $10 per night for a/c, but prices include tax. Pros: The included breakfast is quite good, convenient location with Duarte Park across the street, free Wi-Fi. Cons: Receptionists are too easily overwhelmed, the lobby and breakfast room are too dark, hotel accepts no credit cards or even travelers checks.
