Casa de Tarzan
At a Glance
- you're at one with nature (the sound of the rushing river is omnipresent)
- can be romantic, especially with a full moon
- a nearby local family acts as caretaker and can provide maid service or cook for you
Pros
- a hard-core adventure only for the self-sufficient
- the long trek here isn't feasible after dark
Cons
Casa de Tarzan Review
The innovative, trilevel Tarzan's House is deep in the tropical forest, with decks overhanging a river. The ultimate escape for adventurous types, it's accessible only by a 4x4, horseback, or mountain bike, and all food and other necessities must be brought in. This eco-friendly house has its own spring water aqueduct, a generator, and barbecue. Cell phones can now get a signal, a plus that came with its total renovation in 2009. New bamboo furniture has been added, as well as hamacas (hammocks); one bedroom has three bunk beds. Reservations can be made directly through the English-speaking owner or through Eco-Tour Barahona. To reach the house, you go up the drive to Casa Bonita but make a hard left before the hotel, onto a dirt road for some 30 minutes. Five rivers must be forded, but you will eventually get there.
