Hotel Costa Larimar

Fodor's Review:

The best option in downtown Barahona is not a destination hotel. Although the sign says this is where your dreams come true, it's doubtful that this will be your idea of a sweet dream. The facade and layout, including a pool within steps of the beach that fronts a small tree-covered isle, is quite inviting, but the beach furniture is falling apart and swimming in Barahona's own bay is not advisable. Guest rooms, although spacious and with "American" cable TV, have flat pillows on hard beds and less than upscale bedding. The elevator was broken during our last visit. However, you will be treated nicely, and the middling breakfast buffet is served by the pool. Nevertheless, don't add a full meal plan to your stay; the regular buffet grub just isn't worth it. Business travelers frequent here midweek, and Dominican families prevail on weekends. Pros: Bed with breakfast is a good value, nice children's playground, some rooms have private balconies and sea views (request one). Cons: Looks as if no money has been put into it this last decade, little English spoken, noisy families take over on weekends.
