This gorgeous white-sand beach may very well rank among the best you'll ever see, and it's reachable only by boat from the fishing village of Las Cuevas, south of Cabo Rojo, or by a difficult overland route that is not recommended for the inexperienced. Granted this is not for those who require fancy amenities. This is a pristine, isolated beach with absolutely no facilities, so bring a cooler of drinks, food, and whatever else you might need. But if you come prepared, you can spend a blissful couple of hours here.
The unnmarked dirt road to Cabo Rojo is approximately 12 km (7.4 mi) east of Pedernales, off the highway to Oviedo. You'll first pass the limestone and cement plant; if you continue about 6 km (3.7 mi), you'll reach the town of Cabo Rojo; after another 10 minutes or so (approximately ½ mi), you'll reach the fishing village of Las Cuevas, and it's here that fishing boats can take you to the beach. Expect to pay $60 (but try bargaining); agree on a time the fisherman will return to pick you up. Offer to pay one-half on arrival and one-half when he picks you up. Las Cuevas also has a boat-rental operation and a decent seafood restaurant. The beach is also reachable by road if you have a 4x4 vehicle, but be sure to ask a local in Las Cuevas how to get there, and we highly recommend you do not take this route unless you're experienced driving in the area. If you don't want to make the trip unescorted, both AGUINAPE and ECO-Tours offer organized excursions. At this writing, a new tourist center was expected to open in 2008 in Cabo Rojo, and you'll be able to arrange transportation there when it's open.
