Santo Domingo Top 5

Santo Domingo Top 5

Historical Sites. Santo Domingo's Zona Colonial is becoming known as one of the most appealing historic districts in the Caribbean. Check out the New World's oldest cathedral (which is still in service at Parque Colon), Casa Reales, or the Alcazar de Colón at Plaza de España.

Have a Beach Day. The capital is on the Caribbean but has no swimming beaches. Instead, go about an hour east and buy an inexpensive day-pass for the Barcelo Capella Resort in Juan Dolio. If you want a more in-depth look, head underwater with the professional German instructors at the dive center.

Wine & Dine. Partake in the city's sophisticated restaurant scene. There are restaurants galore in the Zona Colonial, in the top hotels along the Malecón, and in some upscale residential districts.

Shop 'til You Drop. Whether souvenir shopping on Calle El Conde, buying Dominican cigars and rum, or designer clothing in Piantini, you can find bargains here on quality goods.

Love the Nightlife. Head to one of the hotel lounges such as the one at the Hilton, which features live jazz, or else try one of the small, artsy bars in the Zone, then go dancing at one of the clubs. There are also more than a half-dozen casinos to choose from, each more attractive than the other.
