Fodor's Review

Without question, this is a world-class cultural center for Dominican arts and culture. A postmodern building full of light from a crystal dome, the center includes several attractions, galleries for special exhibits, a sculpture garden, and an aviary. It has a replica of La Aurora's first cigar factory, too. Presently, an exhibition celebrates the biennel Eduardo Jimenes Art Contest; 2014 was the contest's 50th anniversary. There's even a first-rate cafeteria and a museum shop where you can buy high-quality, artsy souvenirs and jewelry. Check the website for activities and night events. Friday night there is a free soiree, with live music or a music video (from Spanish pop to R&B). The café stays open and serves beer, wine, and light fare. It can be a fine way to meet sophisticated Santiagueros who have a high level of fluency in English. It's best to give advance notice if you want a guided tour in English.
