Ten steps from Playa Bonita, Acaya has a cosmopolitan beach bum vibe, mixing a casual setting with touches of surprisingly tasteful decor—and the addition of air-conditioning, a rarity in these parts. Rooms are simple, with white-tile floors and queen beds with pastel linens; but high ceilings, light colors, and wood shutters create a feeling of lightness and space. Stay closer to the restaurant; doubles in the next building aren't quite as nice. Josy Miklas, a former French fashion designer, opened the hotel in 1998. She has designed many of the furnishings, including lamps made from gourds collected on property and ensures a high standard of cleanliness. A full breakfast, included in the price, is made fresh each morning, even if you sleep in until 3. You get beach chairs and cushions for a day on the sand, and if you're feeling ambitious, there's a shop on-site to rent kite boards. Bathrooms are spacious, with two sinks, and are painted a cheery cerulean. The stylish restaurant and bar have hammocks and games that make it a relaxing place to hang out. Pros: Inexpensive, stylish, bright. Cons: The tide sometimes covers up the small beach.
