Landscaped lawns, modern sculptures, and sleek buildings make up the Plaza de la Cultura. There are several museums and a theater here. The works of 20th-century Dominican and foreign artists are displayed in the Museo de Arte Moderno (809/682-2154). Native sons include Elvis Aviles, an abstract painter whose works have a lot of texture. His art combines Spanish influences with Taíno Indian and other Dominican symbols. Tony Capellan is one of the best-known artists, representing the D.R. in major international exhibitions. The Museo del Hombre Dominicano (809/687-3622) traces the migrations of Indians from South America through the Caribbean islands. The Teatro Nacional (809/687-3191) stages fascinating performances in Spanish only, but don't let that stop you. When in Rome, you would go to an Italian opera, right?
