Fodor's Review

The area encompasses Cabeza de Torres, Playa Bavaro, and continues all the way around the peninsula to Playa de Uvero Alto. Each resort has its own strip of sand with rows of chaise longues; you can call in advance for a day pass, although not all hotels will accommodate outside guests, especially in high season. Playa El Cortecito is more how life used to be, with fishermen bringing in their catch, a few local bars and seafood restaurants, etc. The stretch that includes

Club Med and the Puntacana Resort, which encompasses Tortuga Bay and the new Westin, is one of the most beautiful. In theory, it is the only area that should have the designation, Punta Cana, but as tourism and popularity grew, the whole coastal region has been labeled with the name. A new, smooth highway now leads to the more-deserted stretches up "north," in Uvero Alto area. Some fine resorts are located here, however, there are few services outside their compounds.
