Punta Cana

Investors bought land in this isolated peninsula in the eastern D.R. in 1969 and developed the Punta Cana Resort & Club, which now encompasses some 15,000 acres. Club Med was the first all-inclusive resort in this area where that form of resort now predominates. The privately owned airport is now the second busiest in the Caribbean, and more than half of all tourists coming to the Dominican Republic arrive here. The area has more than 50,000 hotel rooms, more than 90% of which are in all-inclusive resorts. As development creeps both up the coast (to Uvero Alto) and south (to Juanillo), Playa Punta Cana remains the least developed of the region's beaches.
