Other Hotel Choices
Punta Cana is awash in hotels. Those recommended here are our favorites, but there are others worth considering, such as:
Secrets Royal Beach. The lobby at this sceney, adults-only all-suites resort is like a modern art gallery, with suspended fish sculptures immediately attracting the eye; however, the Caribbean-accented guest rooms do not quite match. Two à la carte restaurants, Oceana (seafood) and the Seaside Grill (with steaks) are good; the international buffet, La Riviera, is global indeed, with lunch offerings such as Portugal's answer to paella. And there are unlimited premium-brand liquors. The bonus is that just adjacent is the sister resort, the family-friendly Now Larimar Punta Cana, where Secrets guests have access to all facilities, including 8 more restaurants. Junior suites have playful contemporary decor and furnishings, but they do not have the high-end look of the public areas. Swim-out rooms let you drop into the lazy-river pool, but the next best are the second-floor rooms with better sea views. Pros: idyllic for weddings and honeymoons; nightly entertainment at the main plaza; exceptional 17,000-square-foot Spa by Pevonia. Cons: beach vendors and excursion salespeople can be annoying; some clients think food is not as stellar as the environment; tropical view rooms don't compare to more expensive accommodations. El Cortecito, Avenida Alemania S/N, Bávaro. 809/221–4646. www.secretsresorts.com. 372 rooms. All-inclusive.
