Saona Island

Saona Island

This scenic, secluded island known for its exquisite beach is off the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, near Bayahibe. Saona is part of a government-protected nature reserve, with tropical wildlife and exotic birds in their natural habitat. The island's blue waters teem with various species of marine life, most notably the area's indigenous starfish. Protective sandbars keep the sand sparkling white. The beach is a popular day-trip destination for tourists from the resorts in Punta Cana and La Romana. Most tours sail here by catamaran from Bayahibe (about 90 minutes from Punta Cana by a tour bus, which will pick you up and drop you off at your hotel), and you can spend the day kicking back on the beach or swimming. Extra features, like a stop at a natural pool, are included with some tours, which cost about $90 to $95 for a full day, including, lunch and beverages. Bring suntan lotion, towels, a swimsuit, a camera, and some cash for souvenirs or extra drinks.
