Saona Island

Saona Island

This scenic, secluded island with a beautiful beach is off the southeastern end of the D.R., near Bayahibe C Saona is part of a government-protected nature reserve replete with tropical wildlife and exotic birds in their natural habitat. It's off the southern coast of the Parque Nacional del Este and known for its exquisite beauty. The island's resplendent blue waters are teeming with various species of marine life, most notably the area's indigenous starfish. And protective sandbars keep the sand sparkling white. The breathtaking beach is a popular day-trip destination for tourists from the resorts in Punta Cana and La Romana. Most tours sail here by catamaran from Bayahibe (about 90 minutes from Punta Cana by tour bus), and you can spend the day kicking back on the beach or swimming. Extra features, like a stop at a natural pool, are included with some tours, which cost about $85 to $90 for a full day, including lunch and beverages. Bring suntan lotion, towels, a swimsuit, a camera, and some cash for souvenirs or extra drinks.
