The largest lake in the Antilles is near the Haitian border. The salt lake is also the lowest point in the Antilles: 114 feet below sea level. It encircles wild, arid, and thorny islands that serve as sanctuaries for such exotic birds and reptiles as flamingos, iguanas, and caimans -- the indigenous crocodile. The area is targeted by the government for improvements and infrastructure designed for ecotourists, but progress continues to be slow.
