$$$-$$$$, Santo Domingo
Fodor's Review:
This luxury hotel, sculpted from the residence of the first Governor of the Americas, is the best thing to happen in the Zone since Diego Columbus's palace was finished in 1517. Colonial rooms have canopied king-size beds, tall ceilings, original stone window benches, and shutters. Some prefer the sunny (smaller) rooms in the contemporary annex; with the river views, these are smart examples of French minimalist style. The pool is shaded by trees and tropical plantings, and swimmers leave the sun for a fitness break in the gym. The bar is a social scene, particularly when the music man plays at cocktail hour, which includes complimentary hors d'oeuvres. The breakfast spread is lavish.
